The Dragon Diva Dress Boutique at Lake Placid High School

The Dragon Diva Dress Boutique at Lake Placid High School opened its doors Friday for students and parents to shop for Homecoming gowns.

The AVID class has been collecting gently used gowns to stock its unique boutique for some months. The inventory was filled with about 60 sparkling formals and semi-formals.

Dresses sizes ranged from extra small to extra large. Prices were set well below retail, from $10 to $40. One example of the incredible bargains was a Jessica McClintock gown that normally sells for over $100. It was priced at just $25.

Assuming the student returns the dress in good repair, the total spent on the gown would be $12.50 after receiving half back after Homecoming festivities. Or the students can keep the dresses.

Facilitators Jackie Coyne and Jennifer Corley said they were pleased with the quantity, quality and variety of dresses that were for sale on the opening day of the boutique. Dozens of excited young women tried on dresses in search of just the right one.

“There is a good selection,” stated Coyne. “There aren’t any that seem immodest or inappropriate.”

Once the young lady picked out the dress, they paid the discounted rate. They were instructed when and where to bring the cleaned dress back to receive half of their purchase price back.

“This project teaches business skills, merchandising, and word-of-mouth advertising,” said Corley. “This helps students that would normally travel to other cities to go buy a dress.”

Saturday shopping

The next opportunity to shop at the Dragon DIVA Dress Boutique will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the high school.

Homecoming is October 25 and AVID class members will provide salon services of hair and makeup for a small fee that day.
